Petersburg, Virginia, was a rail hub, and this stereograph records its buildings in April 1865, just after Union forces broke the Confederate lines there on April 2 and took the city. The picture survives as two glass negatives, one for each half of a stereo pair, which when viewed together through a stereoscope gave the scene depth. The photographer, David B. Woodbury, worked with the wet collodion process, which required the plates to be coated and exposed before they dried. His views of the war's aftermath help show how a city that had endured a nearly ten-month siege looked as the fighting moved on.
