Taken at Petersburg, Virginia, in 1862, this stereograph shows a seated officer whose name the record does not preserve; the caption on the negative sleeve reads only "Unknown." The image was made by David B. Woodbury, a photographer who documented Union-occupied Virginia towns during the war, and it survives as a wet collodion glass negative meant for viewing through a stereoscope. Petersburg, a rail and supply hub south of Richmond, saw Union troops pass through during the 1862 Peninsula campaign, so the picture offers a glimpse of officers in the field during that tense period.
