Taken in Petersburg, Virginia, in 1862, this stereograph turns the lens on the photographers themselves as they rest in camp, a rarer subject than the battlefields and officers that dominate the wartime record. It survives as a wet collodion glass negative, a process that required the photographer to coat, expose and develop each plate within minutes, so field work meant hauling a portable darkroom alongside the cameras. The photographer credited here, David B. Woodbury, died in 1866, and Petersburg, a rail hub south of Richmond, mattered to both armies.
