Shelter tents pitched among pine trees near Petersburg, Virginia, are the focus of this August 1864 view, taken during the siege that began that June. The small canvas tents, each meant for two men, show how troops lived in the field while they waited out the fighting around the city. The glass negative was made with the wet collodion process, which required the plate to be coated, exposed and developed before it dried. David B. Woodbury, a photographer who worked in the Petersburg area during the war, made the image.
