Chimneys rise above the rubble in this view of Hampton, Virginia, where a lone man stands among the remains of the town. Hampton was largely burned in August 1861, when Confederate forces set fire to it before withdrawing, leaving behind little but brick chimneys and foundations. Published by Taylor & Huntington, the photograph belongs to the Civil War series that documented the early damage to Virginia's towns and the scale of wartime destruction.
