Only brick chimneys stand among the ruins in this stereograph of Hampton, Virginia, the houses around them reduced to rubble. Confederate forces set the town on fire in August 1861 as they withdrew ahead of Union troops, and views like this one show how little of it survived. The photographer, James F. Gibson, was associated with Mathew Brady's studio, and the image is a glass stereograph made from a wet collodion negative. The catalog dates it to 1860, which is earlier than the burning, so that date may be an error.
