Slab-town, as the caption on the negative sleeve names it, was a makeshift settlement of rough board shanties in Hampton, Virginia, photographed in December 1864. Hampton had been under Union control since 1861, and it drew large numbers of people who had escaped enslavement, many of whom lived in crowded camps and improvised housing built from whatever lumber was at hand. The picture is a wet collodion glass stereograph, a format that made scenes like this appear three-dimensional when viewed through a stereoscope. The negative was once credited to Alexander Gardner, a prominent Civil War photographer, though that attribution is now considered uncertain.
