Hampton, Virginia, on the Chesapeake Bay near Fort Monroe, became a Union base early in the Civil War, and this stereograph records the hospital and grounds there. The image was made as a glass negative using the wet collodion process, which required photographers to coat and expose plates before they dried. Photographer James F. Gibson made it, and its paired views were meant to be seen through a stereoscope for a sense of depth. The catalog gives the date as 1860, which is earlier than the war, so that date is worth checking against the wartime subject.
