City Point, Virginia, served as the Union Army's main supply base and port during the Petersburg siege in 1864, and this view turns to the rows of tents that made up its general hospital. The photograph was taken by James F. Gibson, a Washington photographer who worked with the Union army's camps and depots during the war, using a wet collodion glass negative. Hospitals like this one, set up near the James River landing, received wounded men shipped up from the fighting around Petersburg, so the orderly lines of canvas show a medical system struggling to keep pace with the casualties.
