This view shows the inside of a ward at Harewood Hospital, one of the Union Army's general hospitals in and around Washington, D.C., photographed in 1864. By then the city had become a major medical center, with dozens of hospitals treating soldiers wounded in campaigns across Virginia and Maryland. The picture was made by David B. Woodbury, a Washington photographer, using the wet collodion process on glass, which required the plate to be coated and exposed before it dried. Its stereograph format meant it was taken as a pair of near-identical images, designed to be seen in three dimensions through a viewer. Views like this one give a rare look at the rows of beds and daily routines of wartime care.
