This glass stereograph negative records the Grand Review of the Army in Washington in May 1865, when Union troops marched up Pennsylvania Avenue over two days, May 23 and 24, past a reviewing stand where President Andrew Johnson and other officials watched. The photograph was made by David B. Woodbury, a Washington photographer who died in 1866, using the wet collodion process, which required exposing and developing the glass plate while it was still wet. The parade marked the close of the Civil War's major campaigns and the start of the army's demobilization, and the paired images of a stereograph give a sense of depth that single prints could not.
