A glass wet collodion negative from April 1865 records a government mess house in Washington, D.C., a building that fed workers in the federal city during the final weeks of the Civil War. The photographer, David B. Woodbury, worked in Washington until his death in 1866. Wet collodion plates had to be coated, exposed, and developed before they dried, so the process demanded speed and careful preparation in the field. The month of the picture also saw Lee's surrender at Appomattox and Lincoln's assassination, which made Washington a city in transition.
