Few pictures from the capital at the end of the war show the unglamorous machinery behind the Union army, and this glass negative is one of them. It records government repair shops in Washington, D.C., captioned as April 1865, the month Richmond fell and Lee surrendered at Appomattox. Wartime Washington depended on such workshops to keep wagons, harnesses, and equipment in service for armies in the field. The photographer, David B. Woodbury, worked in the city during the conflict and died in 1866. The image was made with the wet collodion process, which required the glass plate to be coated and exposed while still damp, so each negative had to be prepared on the spot.
