A group of men posed at the Quartermaster General's office in Washington, D.C., in April 1865, just as the Civil War was ending. The department supplied the Union armies with everything from clothing and tents to transport, so its staff sat at the center of the war's logistics. David B. Woodbury, a photographer who died in 1866, made the picture as a wet collodion glass negative, a process that required the plate to be coated, exposed and developed while still wet. The surviving notes give few details about the individuals shown, so the image is most useful as a record of the office and its work at the war's close.
