Few views of the Civil War capital's defenses show the inside of a fort, which makes this stereograph pair from 1861 unusual. Fort Totten was one of the earthwork and masonry works ringing Washington, D.C., built as the Union army fortified the city after the war began, and it was named for Joseph G. Totten, the Army's longtime chief engineer. Photographer David B. Woodbury made the image on wet collodion glass plates, which had to be coated and exposed before they dried. The two plates were meant to be viewed together through a stereoscope, which gave the scene a three-dimensional depth that flat prints could not.
