A rifled six-pounder made by the Wiard company of Ilion, New York, sits on the grounds of the Washington Arsenal in this 1862 view. The arsenal, on the Potomac at the southern edge of the city, was a major Union ordnance depot, where guns were stored, tested and issued to troops in the capital's defenses. Wiard's light field guns were among the designs the Union army adopted in the early years of the war, when the North was still equipping its batteries with a mix of makers' models. The picture was made with a wet collodion glass negative, the process that dominated photography during the Civil War. The photographer is credited as David B. Woodbury, who documented Washington's military installations during the conflict.
