A Wiard gun, a rifled breech-loading cannon of the kind Union officers were evaluating early in the war, stands at the U.S. Arsenal in Washington, with General Daniel Sickles and a group of men gathered around it. Sickles, a New York politician who raised a brigade in 1861, was a prominent figure in the Union army, and the photograph pairs him with a weapon that reflects the search for better artillery. The image survives as a stereograph, two side-by-side glass negatives meant to be viewed through a stereoscope for a sense of depth. E. & H.T. Anthony, one of the best-known stereograph publishers of the period, issued it.
