This stereograph shows Wiard steel cannon at the Washington Arsenal in 1862, a pair of nearly identical views meant to be seen together through a stereoscope for a three-dimensional effect. The Wiard guns were an alternative to the bronze and iron artillery the Union relied on early in the war, and the arsenal in the capital was a center for testing and storing such weapons. The images were made with wet collodion glass negatives, a process that required photographers to coat and expose plates within minutes. David B. Woodbury, who worked in Washington and died in 1866, made many views of military sites during the conflict, so this picture offers a close look at the everyday hardware of the war effort.
