Few images capture the defenses of Washington in the first months of the Civil War as directly as this stereograph of the camp of the 31st Pennsylvania at Queens Farm, with Fort Slocum visible in the distance. The 31st, later redesignated the 82nd Pennsylvania, was one of the many volunteer regiments that gathered around the capital after the fighting began in April 1861, when the city was ringed by hastily built earthworks. Photographed on wet collodion glass plates and issued as a pair for viewing through a stereoscope, the image was published by E. & H.T. Anthony, the New York firm that supplied much of the period's war photography to a public eager for views of the front.
