The chair Abraham Lincoln occupied at Ford's theater on the night he was shot in April 1865 is the subject here, preserved as a stereograph pair. Its two glass negatives, made by the wet collodion process common in the period, were meant to be viewed through a stereoscope for a three-dimensional effect. The publisher, E. & H.T. Anthony, was a leading New York firm in the stereograph trade, and the word "copyright" scratched into the emulsion shows how seriously such views were protected.
