Company E of the 9th Veteran Reserve Corps, photographed in Washington in April 1865, belonged to a force formed in 1863 for soldiers too worn by wounds or illness for field service but still fit for guard and garrison duty. The month was a turning point, with Lee's surrender at Appomattox on April 9 and President Lincoln's assassination days later. The photographer, David B. Woodbury, made this wet collodion glass negative, and he died in 1866.
