This view shows a dead Confederate soldier lying in a trench at Fort Mahone, a earthwork east of Petersburg, Virginia, that Union troops took as the siege of the city ended in early April 1865. The date in the title falls in the same days Union forces occupied Richmond after Confederate troops abandoned both cities, so the picture records the collapse of the Confederate defense. Published by the War Photograph and Exhibition Company, it was one of many scenes of the war's aftermath sold to a public eager to see the battlefields. Viewers should keep in mind that Civil War photographers sometimes moved or arranged bodies for effect.
