A Confederate soldier lying just inside Union picket lines gives this stereograph its particular grim focus. Its title says the view was made on a morning, though the record cuts off before naming the hour or the exact spot. The siege of Petersburg, Virginia, lasted from mid-1864 until Confederate forces pulled out in early April 1865, and skirmishing along the lines was constant. The Anthony firm and its War Photograph and Exhibition Company sold cards like this one to viewers who wanted to see the war up close through a stereoscope.
