A ditch on the battlefield's right wing, used as a rifle pit, holds the Confederate dead in this 1862 view of Antietam, Maryland. The battle, fought near Sharpsburg on September 17, 1862, remains the bloodiest single day in American military history, and photographs of its aftermath were among the first to show the public the cost of war in such direct terms. The glass stereograph was made with the wet collodion process, which required photographers to prepare and expose plates on site. The record formerly credited it to Alexander Gardner, who worked with Mathew Brady's studio.
