Taken at Antietam in Maryland in September 1862, this view shows a ditch on the right wing, used by Confederate troops as a rifle pit, with the bodies of soldiers still lying in it. The fighting near Sharpsburg on September 17, 1862, was the bloodiest single day in American military history, and photographers who reached the field within days recorded scenes most civilians had never seen. The image is a wet collodion glass negative, a process that required the plate to be coated and exposed before it dried. The sleeve names Alexander Gardner, though this attribution has been questioned for some pictures from the battlefield.
