Looking west across Antietam Creek from the east side, this view shows the stone bridge near Sharpsburg, Maryland, later known as Burnside Bridge. In September 1862, Union troops under Ambrose Burnside fought to cross it on September 17, the day of the battle of Antietam, the bloodiest single day in American history. The negative was once credited to Alexander Gardner, a credit that has since been revised, and it belongs to a wider group of wet collodion glass plates made during the war, when photographers hauled their darkroom equipment onto the field.
