A Confederate soldier lies dead in a trench beyond a chevaux-de-frise, the barrier of sharpened timbers meant to stop infantry charges, in this view of Petersburg, Virginia. The image is a stereograph, made from two glass plates so that viewers with a stereoscope saw the trench in depth, and it was published by the War Photograph and Exhibition Company. Petersburg held out for about ten months of siege warfare in 1864 and 1865 before Confederate lines broke in early April 1865. Photographers who followed the armies recorded the ground that fighting left behind, and scenes like this one carried the war's human cost to viewers far from the front.
