Few defenses at Petersburg, Virginia, were as blunt as the chevaux-de-frise, rows of sharpened timbers angled outward to snag attackers. This stereograph by James F. Gibson shows sections of them lying before the Confederate main works in 1865, during the last months of the siege that Union forces under Ulysses S. Grant kept around the city. Because it was made as a stereo pair, the two glass plates were meant to be viewed through a stereoscope, which gave viewers of the period a sense of depth in the tangled barrier. The wet collodion process demanded careful preparation of each plate, so the scene was recorded deliberately.
