Johnson's Mill sits on the Appomattox River near Petersburg, Virginia, a river town south of Richmond that would later become central to the war's final campaigns. The record credits the photograph to Mathew B. Brady, whose studio documented the conflict from its earliest months, and it lists military personnel among the subjects, suggesting soldiers were present at the site. Dated 1861, the image comes from the first year of fighting, when Virginia had just joined the Confederacy and many mills along the river were still working as they had before the war. Its setting, a working mill rather than a battlefield, shows how the conflict reached ordinary rural industry.
