The mills on the Appomattox River near Campbells Bridge stand at the edge of Petersburg, Virginia, a city that endured a long siege from June 1864 until the spring of 1865. The river's waterpower made such milling sites important to the local economy before the war, and the fighting around the city left the surrounding area heavily damaged. The picture was made in 1865 using the wet collodion process on glass, which required photographers to coat, expose and develop each plate within a short window. Its publisher, the War Photograph and Exhibition Company, issued views like this for a public eager to see the places where the war had been fought.
