This 1861 stereograph shows the medical supply boat Connecticut on the Appomattox River in Virginia, captured in the earliest months of the war. Made with the wet collodion process, each glass plate had to be coated, exposed, and developed on the spot, and the two halves were meant to be seen together through a stereoscope. The negative sleeve says the vessel came from Long Island Sound, and the pictures were once credited to Alexander Gardner, though that attribution is now uncertain.
