The lower bridge over the Chickahominy River in Virginia was a crossing on a slow, muddy stream east of Richmond, country that saw heavy military movement during the war. The image survives as a stereograph: two glass plates made with the wet collodion process, meant to be viewed together through a stereoscope to create a sense of depth. The record dates it to 1861, but the negative sleeve's caption points to 1864, so the date is worth weighing with care. The pair was once credited to Alexander Gardner, an attribution that has since been revised.
