The camp of the 150th Pennsylvania Infantry at Belle Plain, Virginia, is the subject here, a Union supply landing on the Potomac River. The negative sleeve's caption dates the view to March 1863, about three weeks before the Battle of Chancellorsville, when the Army of the Potomac was preparing for its spring campaign. The picture survives as two glass plates that form the left and right halves of a stereograph, meant to be viewed through a stereoscope for a sense of depth. The record notes that it was once attributed to Alexander Gardner.
