Fort Monroe, on the tip of the Virginia peninsula at Hampton Roads, was one of the few Southern coastal forts that stayed in Union hands throughout the war, and it became a major supply and staging base. This 1864 glass negative by David B. Woodbury shows the 3d Pennsylvania Heavy Artillery drawn up on parade there. Heavy artillery regiments of this kind usually garrisoned fixed fortifications rather than marching in the field, so the scene captures the routine, disciplined side of the war that the fort's defenders lived with daily.
