The subject here is the "Lincoln Gun," a 15-inch Rodman columbiad mounted at Fort Monroe, the Union stronghold on Old Point Comfort at the mouth of Hampton Roads, Virginia. Designed by Army ordnance officer Thomas Rodman, these massive smoothbore cast-iron guns were built to fire heavy shot against shipping and masonry, and this 1864 wet-collodion glass negative records one of the largest of them. Fort Monroe stayed in Union hands for the entire war, making it a key base for operations on the Virginia Peninsula. The gun's popular name is tied to President Abraham Lincoln's visits to the fort during the conflict, and the photograph shows the sheer scale of coastal artillery that defended the harbor.
