A blockade runner named Teaser rides off Fort Monroe in this December 1864 view, with the Union-held fortress at the tip of the Virginia peninsula nearby. Fort Monroe stayed in Federal hands throughout the war and anchored naval operations against Confederate ports, so the garrison saw many vessels like Teaser attempting to slip past the blockade. The image survives as a wet collodion glass negative, a process that required photographers to coat and expose plates while the emulsion was still wet. The record notes that the picture was once credited to Alexander Gardner, an attribution that appears in the catalog as a former one.
