Fort Monroe, the Union-held fortress at Old Point Comfort on Virginia's Hampton Roads, was a supply depot and landing point for much of the war, and this view records its wharf in 1864. The picture survives as two glass negatives that form the left and right halves of a stereograph pair, meant to be viewed together for a three-dimensional effect. Wet collodion plates like these were the standard medium of the period, and the image was once credited to Alexander Gardner, though that attribution is no longer accepted.
