Officers and noncommissioned officers of Companies C and D of the 1st Massachusetts Cavalry were photographed at Petersburg, Virginia, in 1864, during the long siege that began that June. Wet collodion glass negatives like this one were the standard method for camp and field portraits of the period, and photographers had to coat, expose, and develop each plate within minutes. Pictures that group commissioned and noncommissioned officers together give a useful view of how a cavalry company was organized and who led it.
