Two companies of the 3rd Massachusetts Heavy Artillery, A and B, posed for this 1865 view in the District of Columbia, with their officers identified by the record as the subject. Heavy artillery regiments like this one were assigned to the ring of fortifications that guarded Washington during the Civil War, and many spent their service manning big guns rather than fighting in open field battles. The image was made as a wet collodion glass negative, a process that required the photographer to coat, expose, and develop the plate before the emulsion dried. By 1865 this method was still the standard for field and studio work, so the picture reflects the technology of the war's final months.
