Few Civil War sites around Washington carry as much history as the ground near Fort Stevens in Brightwood, where this August 1865 view shows a soldiers' cemetery. Fort Stevens was one of the earthworks guarding the capital, and it came under Confederate attack in July 1864, when Jubal Early's raid reached the city's northern defenses. This wet collodion glass negative was once credited to Alexander Gardner, a leading Civil War photographer, but the record now lists that attribution as uncertain. The picture was made only months after the war ended, when the dead of the Washington defenses were being gathered into permanent graves.
