The gun pictured here is the Swamp Angel, a large Parrott rifle set up in a marsh battery on Morris Island, South Carolina, in 1863. Union forces under Gen. Quincy Gillmore used it to shell Charleston from unusually long range. The weapon burst in August 1863 after firing only a few dozen rounds, and this view records the wrecked emplacement afterward. David B. Woodbury, an army engineer who photographed the Charleston operations, made the wet collodion glass negative. Its wartime subject and the damage it documents make it a useful record of the siege.
