The image shows a natural arch at Seabrook Point on the South Carolina coast, a rock formation that drew the attention of photographers working in the Lowcountry in 1862. The negative sleeve credits T. H. O'Sullivan, a photographer who worked for Mathew Brady's studio and later documented Civil War sites. By 1862, Union forces held much of the South Carolina coastline and the Sea Islands, and photographers followed the army into these newly occupied areas. The glass wet collodion negative, a fragile process of the period, preserves the sharp detail of the rock and the surrounding shoreline.
