Five generations stand together in this stereograph, and the original caption stresses that all of them were born on the plantation of J. J. Smith near Beaufort, South Carolina. Union forces had occupied the Beaufort area in late 1861, and by 1862 many formerly enslaved people there were living under federal control, which drew photographers to the region. The image is a pair of glass plates made with the wet collodion process, and the negative sleeve credits Timothy H. O'Sullivan, though the record also lists James F. Gibson. Viewed through a stereoscope, the two halves give the group a sense of depth.
