Fort Morgan, on the tip of the peninsula guarding the entrance to Mobile Bay, is the subject of this stereograph, shown from the Citadel and looking southwest. Alabama state forces seized the fort in January 1861, weeks after the state seceded, and it became a Confederate post for the first years of the Civil War. The pair of glass plates was made with the wet collodion process and is attributed to photographer James F. Gibson, who worked in the early years of the war. The record's "ruins" label may reflect later condition or cataloging rather than the fort's state in 1861.
