Taken in December 1861, this view looks across the Beaufort, South Carolina, waterfront, a town Union forces had occupied only weeks earlier after the navy's victory at Port Royal Sound. It survives as a stereograph, two glass negatives exposed side by side so that a stereoscope could fuse them into a single image with depth. The photographer is recorded as T. H. O'Sullivan, who later became known for his Civil War and Western survey work. The wet collodion process required each glass plate to be coated, exposed and developed within minutes, which made field work like this demanding.
