This stereograph shows the signal tower on Elk Mountain in Maryland, which looked out over the Antietam battlefield in 1862. Signal stations like this one were part of the Union Army's communications network, where officers used flags by day and torches by night to relay messages across the field during the Antietam campaign of September 1862. The image is a wet collodion glass negative, a process that required quick exposures and a portable darkroom. It was formerly attributed to Alexander Gardner, whose photographs did much to shape the war's visual record.
