Taken at Bermuda Hundred, Virginia, in 1864, this stereograph shows a signal tower associated with Union general Benjamin Butler's lines. That spring Butler's Army of the James held a narrow peninsula between the James and Appomattox rivers, and signal stations like this one helped officers pass messages and watch the surrounding ground. The image was made as a pair of glass plates using the wet collodion process, so viewing it through a stereoscope gives the tower and the men near it a sense of depth that a single print cannot.
