The tower on Elk Mountain in Maryland is the subject here, a timber signal station set on high ground where Union signal men could watch for enemy movements and relay messages by flag or lamp across miles of countryside. The 1862 glass negative was made with the wet collodion process, which required the photographer to coat, expose, and develop each plate before the emulsion dried. The picture was long credited to Alexander Gardner, a leading Civil War photographer, but the Library of Congress lists that attribution as former, so the maker is now uncertain. Its place in the Civil War glass negative collection makes it a useful record of how the army used high points for communication.
