St. Joseph's Seminary in Emmitsburg, Maryland, was run by the Sisters of Charity and sat just south of the Pennsylvania line, close enough to feel the 1863 Gettysburg campaign as armies moved through the surrounding countryside. This view survives as a wet collodion glass stereograph negative, and its caption was written on the negative sleeve. The photographer was once credited to Alexander Gardner, an attribution the record now treats as uncertain. The picture is worth noticing for how a church school far from the main battlefield still became part of the wartime visual record.
