Few Civil War portraits name their sitters as plainly as this one, which identifies a Mrs. Tynan and her sons in Frederick, Maryland, in 1862. Frederick was a divided border town that was occupied by both Union and Confederate armies during the war, and its residents lived close to the campaigns passing through. The picture survives as a wet collodion glass negative, a process that required photographers to coat and expose each plate before it dried. The negative was once credited to Alexander Gardner, a well-known Civil War photographer, though that attribution has since been questioned.
